S.R. 0095 involved the widening of a section of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia for PennDOT District 6-0. EEI oversaw the development of value engineering proposals to eliminate jet grout ground improvement beneath two bridge widening expansions, four proposed retaining walls, and three proposed sign structure foundations for the general contractor. Each value engineering proposal considered lightweight backfill of the proposed structures including geofoam, lightweight concrete and lightweight aggregate, deep foundations, and impact pier ground improvement. The preferred alternative was found to be lightweight concrete backfill for all of the structures except one where impact pier ground improvement would be provided. Design of multi-stage temporary shoring was also designed under EEI’s direction for three bridges and four retaining walls.
