Geotechnical investigation for the construction of a new 12-inch diameter natural gas pipeline under the Susquehanna River from the Borough of Steelton, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania to the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Distribution Susquehanna Facility, York County, Pennsylvania. The new approximately 4,100 foot pipeline will be placed via directional drilling. Approximately 2,300 feet will traverse under the Susquehanna River bed and rail lines located on both the east and west banks of the river. The investigation comprised three land borings, three water borings, a laboratory testing program and a geotechnical report that also included construction recommendations. The water borings were completed utilizing an ATV-mounted drill rig capable of drilling and maneuvering in aquatic conditions. Rock percent recovery and quality as well as unconfined compressive strength of selected specimens were also provided.
